The Broken Arrow Police Department discovered and improvised explosive device early Friday during a traffic stop.
Just after midnight officers pulled over a vehicle going the wrong way on the westbound Kenosha Street exit ramp off Highway 51. While searching the vehicle officers found what looked like a homemade explosive — a PVC pipe with end caps and a fuse.
The Tulsa Police Department Bomb Squad was called in, confirmed it was an active improvised explosive device (IED), and safely destroyed it.
There is no current or ongoing threat to the public.
“This serves as a strong reminder: even routine traffic stops can quickly become dangerous. We are grateful for the officers’ training and fast response in keeping everyone safe,” said BAPD Public Information Officer Ethan Hutchins.
The driver was arrested for an outstanding felony warrant and drug paraphernalia, and a female passenger was also taken into custody for paraphernalia possession. Additional charges for possession of the device are pending, Hutchins said.
