On Tuesday morning, trash and recycling curbside collection services were suspended due to the winter weather storm that brought freezing precipitation and dangerously cold temperatures and wind chill values, which are forecasted through Friday.
At the time of the suspension on Tuesday, we had collected roughly 20 percent of the Monday customer route. Services this week were already scheduled to slide to the following day due to the Presidents Day holiday on Monday.
Shortly after the suspension of services, the landfill was also forced to close due to the weather conditions and was not scheduled to resume its business operating hours until Thursday afternoon.
Even if the temperature and wind chill improved on Friday to be safe conditions for our employees to operate all available side and rear loading vehicles, we would have less than a day and a half to attempt to collect nearly four days of service routes. That proposition is neither a realistic nor safe objective for our employees.
As a result of these factors, the City of Broken Arrow trash and recycling services will resume normal operations on Monday, February 24.
There will be no additional charge assessed to a customer’s utility bill for extra refuse in garbage bags placed beside the black trash cart next week.
There will be no additional charge assessed to a customer’s utility bill for extra recyclables next week. Extra recyclables should be placed in a recyclable container, such as a cardboard box, next to the blue recycle cart.
“Thank you to our customers for understanding that our priority must be the safety of our employees and ensuring we are minimizing their exposure during these types of extreme weather conditions,” city officials said Thursday. “We appreciate their support of the decision to suspend these services as being necessary for the overall safety of these non-emergency employees who serve an important and essential role in our community.”
