The city of Broken Arrow says it is exploring the purchase of the Hansen-Mueller grain elevator downtown after news broke this week that the structure is up for sale.
The Broken Arrow City Council met during a closed session Tuesday to discuss the property and voted to allow staff to obtain appraisals and potentially negotiate a purchase of the inactive elevator “for a reasonable price,” according to a city spokesperson.
Since the Sentinel reported the 185-foot-tall structure – affectionally named by some residents as ‘Mac’ — was the subject of an online auction on April 18, many residents have expressed concern that it could be moved or torn down.
They’ve also provided a number of ideas on what could be done with the elevator if the funding and support was there.
Farmers Co-Op came to Broken Arrow in 1942, succeeding BA Milling Co. and in 1962 the current grain elevator was built with the Farmers Co-Op branding on it, says The Museum Broken Arrow.
As of Friday at noon, the elevator had received 13 total bids from a handful of interested parties and the highest bid is $2,750.
