The friends and family of prominent Tulsa meteorologist Travis Meyer are in mourning after Meyer’s son was killed after crashing his motorcycle in south Tulsa.
Ashton Scott Meyer, 23, was the son of Travis and Susan Crow, and he “left this world far too soon,” his family said Friday in announcing funeral arrangements. “He was a true original — a lovable teddy bear of a man with a heart as big as the Oklahoma sky. He never met a stranger, and once you knew him you never forgot him.
“He had a gift for making people laugh, especially when giving his brother Crosby a hard time. His footsteps were never quiet — those “Fred Flintstone feet” could always be heard coming down the hall.”
Ashton’s family added he was the type that “lit up every room he entered — with his piercing blue eyes, golden blonde hair and a smile so full of life it could brighten even the darkest day.”
Ashton also had an adventurous spirit, “a lead foot, and a passion for speed, whether behind the wheel or chasing his next adrenaline rush.”
The Tulsa Police Department said Meyer was riding his motorcycle on E. 71st Street, just east of Yale Avenue, at 4:50 p.m. when the accident occurred. Witnesses said Meyer was riding the motorcycle recklessly, weaving in and out of traffic, performing wheelies and speeding.
At some point while approaching Yale, Meyer laid the bike down on its side to avoid hitting a vehicle turning in front of him, police said.
The motorcycle crashed into one vehicle, causing the motorcycle’s gas tank to catch fire. Meyer was thrown from the motorcycle and under another vehicle. According to police, several callers reported the motorcycle was on fire and the rider was pinned under a vehicle.
Meyer was taken to the hospital and died a short time later. The drivers of the other two vehicles involved were not seriously injured.
Tulsa police said the investigation is ongoing as the department’s Advanced Traffic Investigators analyze evidence. At this time, no charges are anticipated in this case, police said.
A celebration of Ashton’s life will be held Friday, Sept. 12 at 2 p.m. at New Beginnings in Bixby. Friends and family may leave condolences by visiting www.schaudtfuneralservice.com.
