For motorists on the east side of Broken Arrow it’s nothing unusual to see and appreciate livestock still roaming the fields, in spite of all the housing developments sprouting up. But a a cruel act early Sunday shattered that enjoyment, most importantly for the owner of some treasured livestock.
Authorities are investigating after two registered longhorn cows were shot and killed in a field just south of 61st Street and Oneta Road. It’s believed the incident happened around 3 a.m. Sunday and the perpetrators may have been driving a small car.
Donations from members of the community have been offered as a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.
The list of farms and organizations putting up cash include the animal owners, Kirt and Judy Sperry Wingate, Cross B Cattle and Hay in Harpers Ferry, Wagoner County Cattlemen’s Association, Harper Land and Cattle, Hill Top Farm and the The Praying L.
The calves will be orphans and may not grow to their true potential, not to mention the future calves these cows would have.
“Both of these had young babies and one was not even 2 weeks old,” said Judy Sperry Wingate. “I have had the blood line in these two for at least 25 years. It just breaks my heart. Loss of livestock in our world is part of it but not a loss like this.”
Cross B Farm in Broken Arrow noted the incident happened near multiple houses and those searching for answers hope someone might have video surveillance footage that could help.
“We have had cattle shot on the side of the road as well. It’s horrible to pull up to what was a beautiful big and healthy cow that is laying there dead with a gun shot wound or an arrow in its side. It’s sickening,” Cross B Farm said on Facebook.
Anyone with potential tips or information on the incident is asked to call the Wagoner County Sheriffs Department or contact Cross B Farm.
