A truck driver forced off the road and over the side of a bridge Thursday on the Will Rogers Turnpike miraculously survived and the driver who instigated the crash was arrested, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said.
Troopers investigating the incident said Nurbin Remigio Hernandez-Guzman lost control of his sedan near the Vinita exit on I-44 and crashed into the semi, sending it plunging over the bridge onto Highway 60.
The truck burst into flames shortly after, but the driver walked away with only minor injuries, OHP said.
Hernandez-Guzman fled the scene on foot and was the subject of 3-hour manhunt before he was captured in a wooded area nearby. He was booked into the Craig County Jail on charges of leaving the scene of an injury crash, reckless driving, obstruction, driving without a license and failure to maintain insurance.
“We’re grateful this crash did not result in any fatalities. We also want to thank the first responders and assisting agencies who helped manage this large and complex scene, which impacted both the Will Rogers Turnpike and State Highway 60,” OHP said in a statement.
The incident remains under investigation but will be submitted to the Craig County District Attorney’s office for review.
Inspectors said the crash damaged the guardrail on the turnpike but there was no fire damage indicated to the bridge.
