The Wagoner County Sheriff’s Department is warning residents to follow safety regulations with ATVs after responding to a serious accident Tuesday near Taylors Ferry.
Four deputies responded to the incident and found a 16-year-old boy and 10-year-old girl involved in the accident. They found the girl needed immediate medical care due to her injuries and applied a tourniquet. She was taken by Wagoner EMS to Wagoner Hospital and flown via helicopter to a Tulsa hospital.
No word was provided about the condition of the boy. The Taylors Ferry Fire Department assisted deputies on scene.
It has been a deadly year in Oklahoma for ATV accidents. Two weeks ago, two children were killed west of Norman when an ATV crashed at a local park in Cleveland County. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said no helmets were in use by the driver or passengers.
An Ardmore teen died in an ATV crash in Ardmore last March, there was a deadly ATV roll-over crash in west Tulsa in April, and last fall two high school girls were killed in an ATV accident near Drumright.
Riders should be wearing safety equipment when operating any motor vehicle and remember to drive in a safe and reasonable manner, said Wagoner County Sheriff Chris Elliott.
With Wagoner County growing quickly and more new neighborhoods being built, the number of complaints of unauthorized drivers on golf carts and ATVs on neighborhood streets has risen, Elliott added.
