The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said 1 person was killed during a 2-vehicle accident just east of Wagoner.
Troopers identified the victim as Carter Mullins, 18, of Wagoner, who was operating a motorcycle and pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
OHP said Mullins was headed eastbound on Highway 51, near S. 318 Road, at a high rate of speed when it struck the rear of a minivan driven by 76-year-old Sandra Cox of Wagoner. Mullins’ motorcycle departed the highway to the south and Mullins was ejected northward and he landed on the pavement.
Cox, who was driving a Honda Odyssey minivan, was not injured in the accident. Troopers said the cause of the accident was Mullins riding at an unsafe speed.
In a statement on Facebook, Wagoner Public Schools said the loss of a former student was heartbreaking.
“Carter was a treasured member of our school family, and we extend our sincere sympathy and support to his loved ones and friends during this difficult time,” the district said.
“Carter was loved by so many, and his passing is difficult for us all.”
Counselors will be available for students at Wagoner High School Friday and will continue to be for as long as needed.
“Wagoner is a close-knit school community. In our school family, no one experiences pain or loss alone. Our students, parents and staff take pride in caring for one another. Please continue to keep Carter’s family in your thoughts and prayers.”
The Wagoner County Sheriff’s Office, Wagoner Fire Department, Wagoner EMS and Taylors Ferry Fire Department assisted at the accident scene Thursday.
