An employee sleeping overnight at a dispensary in south Tulsa shot a burglar who was attempting into the business early Friday, the Tulsa Police Department said.
Officers were dispatched to Bodega Boyz Dispensary near 61st and Memorial Drive at 3:47 a.m. after the shooter’s girlfriend advised dispatchers her boyfriend shot someone trying to burglarize the business.
TPD said the employee woke up to the sound of glass being broken in the front door and the victim was attempting to open the door. The employee retrieved his gun and shot the subject.
Officers arrived to find an unidentified white male lying on the sidewalk directly in front of the business wearing a ski mask and a hoodie pulled over his head. He had been shot several times. The suspect was transported by EMSA to St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa and is expected to survive.
During the investigation, police learned the business had been burglarized the previous night and an employee and his girlfriend were staying the night inside the business. The employee and his girlfriend were transported to the TPD Detective Division to be interviewed and were later released pending further investigation.
As for questions about the legality of the shooting, Tulsa police said there is the state law that is pertinent to the case and the Tulsa County District Attorney’s Office is expected to review the evidence and determine if the shooting was justified.
