A Coweta police officer and driver of another vehicle escaped serious injury Saturday night after a collision on State Highway 51 that set the police vehicle ablaze.
Witnesses said the accident happened around 10 p.m. in front of the Walmart in 111th Street. Witnesses said they believed the police SUV was involved in a chase with a motorcycle that was fleeing and eluding authorities.
Shortly after the collision the police vehicle caught fire and became engulfed in flames. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol was reported to have rapidly arrived on scene to pull out the drivers and help remove ammunition and weapons from the burning SUV.
The police officer was transported by the Coweta Fire Department to be checked out, but it’s believed the officer and the other driver escaped serious injury.
