A Broken Arrow police officer is being credited with alerting a resident to a fire in her garage and guiding her to safety earlier this months.
BAPD officer Nate Lancaster responded to call on May 3 about a garage fire, and when he arrived he learned an elderly woman lived alone inside.
When Lancaster arrived he saw smoke coming from the garage and could hear crackling from the fire. He went to the front door and loudly announced his presence and also pounded on the door.
“I don’t even know she knew that her house was on fire. Her garage in particular,” Lancaster said.
He kicked the door open and was greeted by the startled woman, who apparently dormant known about the blaze that started. Lancaster guided the woman outside.
“I’m glad it ended up being the way that it did in the grand scheme of things, with her being fine,” Lancaster said. “It’s heartwarming to, you know, be told thank you so much by somebody who’s lost a lot. It just feels really good to know that you actually impacted somebody that day no matter what it is.”
“Thanks to his quick thinking and bravery, he was able to get her out and to safety before things got worse,” the department said.
