Broken Arrow police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened Sunday afternoon near a hotel on the city’s north side.
Police were conducting a traffic stop near 61st Street and Aspen Avenue at 4:15 p.m. at the Clarion Hotel, 2600 N. Aspen Ave., when the white male driver exited the vehicle and started to flee the scene, said Broken Arrow Police Major Stephen Garrett.
The officer tackled the man after a short pursuit and a struggle ensued between the man and officer. The man attempted to pull a gun during the struggle and the officer summarily fired his weapon 3 or 4 times, striking the male, according to Garrett.
The officer immediately rendered life-saving measures before the male was transported to the hospital via ambulance, where he is in serious condition. The officer sustained minor injuries but was later released.
Per routine procedure, the officer involved will be placed on administrative leave while the incident is investigated. Police would not identify the man who was shot or the officer involved.
Yellow crime scene tape surrounded the which sits right off the Broken Arrow Expressway. Officers were searching for evidence around a vehicle parked near the eastern fence of the property and in grass along the fence.
Garrett said a lengthy investigation lies ahead and will likely stretch into the late-night hours.
