The president and founder of Mercy Sakes 2nd Chance Dog Rescue has been booked on 39 counts of animal cruelty, according to Tulsa County Jail records.
Sasha Marie Smith, 38, was placed in custody Saturday after Tulsa authorities searched her house and found 10 additional dogs living in unsanitary conditions, along with 1 cat. Bond was set at $120,000 for each count, bringing Smith’s total bond at $4.6 million. Officers said the animals had visible bone structures and were removed by Tulsa Animal Services.
Marcia Reynolds, 44, who served as the adoption coordinator for the animal rescue, was arrested a few days earlier on 29 counts of animal cruelty after Tulsa Animal Rescue and the Tulsa Police Department discovered 22 dogs alive but in poor condition, and 19 deceased dogs, along with 2 cats. Reynolds’ bond was set at $580,000.
Tulsa police and Animal Services personnel arrived at the Mercy Haven location near 12th Street and Memorial Drive and noted a “strong odor of death” near the front door and windows, and heavy fly activity.
As the Tulsa Fire Department was preparing to breach the front door, Reynolds opened it and said she could not hear commands because she was wearing headphones.
