The city of Broken Arrow has scheduled a special meeting next month to consider a controversial proposal for a mosque and retail center on the city’s south side.
The Jan. 12 special meeting will take place at Northeastern State University’s Administrative Services building, 3100 New Orleans St. The meeting is slated for 6 p.m., and those wishing to speak must fill out a form by 5:50 p.m., the city said.
After hearing more than 4 hours of emotional comments from the public about a proposed mosque in Broken Arrow, the city’s Planning Commission voted last Thursday to recommend approval of a rezoning application and conditional use permit for the project.
The rezoning and use permit is now before the Broken Arrow City Council for review. If the project moves further, there will be requisite studies on drainage, traffic, utilities and more to be completed before construction can begin.
Rick Brown, the architect representing the developer, the Islamic Society of Tulsa, said the house of worship and commercial center would be built in stages. The prayer facility, when fully built out, would total 38,000 square feet and include about 700 parking spaces.
Phase 1 would be the prayer hall and support functions, Phase 2 would finish out the second floor with classrooms and a women’s prayer area, Phase 3 would add a gym.
Most attending the Planning Commission meeting voiced opposition to the project for cultural reasons, although some stood up for ISOT, which has outgrown its mosque in Tulsa. Others objected to physical challenges of the site, including access, sewer and traffic issues.

why don’t you write an article about the prayer towers. It goes beyond culture, it is disturbing the peace.
Janice says
Broken Arrow will regret allowing this mosque to be built in their city. Nothing good has come from allowing this in any community. They take over everything and soon they will outnumber Americans in the community. It happened in Minnesota, it happened in Michigan.
JL says
What entity is funding the project?
Michael says
Nothing good will come of this. Do your research , look at London, Dearborn Michigan, Minnesota. For those that will live nearby , I hope you like a morning call to prayer sent over loud speakers. This culture does not assimilate and they have a word “Taqiyya” that allows them to hide their true feelings and desires towards us the infidels. Stop acting like everything and everyone is ok or has good intentions. If you keep shifting the line in the sand of morality you have nothing left but evil.
Al Garcia says
Look at the history. Look at the history.
Look at the history. If everyone Is ok with the past history where other mosques have been built, then more power to them. Just keep this in mind. Evil is like a lion. Waiting to see what it can kill, steal and destroy.
Bob Smith says
Today’s Islam is much different than when the first Mosque were built in Tulsa. Today they shout “Death To America”. Broken Arrow must reject the building of this Mosque in our city, other Cities did not want a Mosque in their City and were able stop its construction. South Broken Arrow does not have the infrastructure to support this construction. Does any Christian Nation want to hear Muslims call to worship five times a day over loud speakers in their community?
