The city of Broken Arrow is poised to begin identifying solutions for fixing the congested, accident-prone Lynn Lane Road corridor in Broken Arrow.
City councilors will vote Tuesday on a proposed $160,000 contract with an engineering firm that will study options to study for traffic improvements to the Lynn Lane (9th Street) and Broken Arrow Expressway Interchange, including the Lynn Lane corridor from Albany Street to Kenosha Street.
The 2018 general obligation (GO) bond included projects to improve the intersections of Lynn Lane (9th Street) at both Kenosha Street and Hillside Drive.
The intersections lie within the 9th Street corridor, between Kenosha Street and Hillside Drive, which currently experiences heavy traffic congestion and delays caused by several contributing factors.
City planners says the number of existing traffic signals within the corridor, the Broken Arrow Expressway (SH-51) bridge and ramp interchange — as well as the roadway configuration — are “all factor into the delays and congestion experienced by motorists traveling the corridor.”
The city approached the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT), since a solution would involve the existing ODOT bridge over and ramps to the expressway to discuss the next steps forward.
With ODOT’s input, it was determined a project is required to study three alternatives at the 9th Street and Broken Arrow Expressway interchange, as well as the entire corridor.
The study would also produce preliminary plans for a recommended solution to the congestion problem.
The study and preliminary plans are necessary to get ODOT approval and project buy-in for improvements at the interchange.
The city has chosen the engineering firm Benham Design to negotiate a design contract for providing design services for the interchange study and preliminary plans project.
