The Broken Arrow City Council agreed Tuesday to spend $650,000 to buy a half-acre parcel of property for future expansion of the Oklahoma Military History Center.
The city opted to use Sales Tax Capital Improvements funds to buy the property at 1201 S. Main St., which was owned by Rogers, Ark.-based Sporleder Investments. The 2026 General Obligation bond series sale this year or next year will include $650,000 for the purchase, which will be used to reimburse the city for the property purchase.
The parcel is located between Veterans Park and the Maple Leaf Shopping Center, and adjacent to The Carlysle Apartments.
ACE Appraisal Group provided a report in May estimating the property’s value at $560,000. The owner was originally willing to sell the property, which totals 0.58 acres, for $640,000.
The City Council asked City Manager Michael Spurgeon to enter into negotiations with Sporleder, and the city offered $600,000 for the property, which the owner accepted in June.
The amount approved Tuesday is higher than the sale price. City officials said they anticipate issuing debt for the project in an aggregate amount “not to exceed approximately $650,000.”
In April, voters Proposition 4 for public facilities, including the Military History Museum Expansion in the amount of $9.2 million. Nearly 70% of voters approved the proposition.
