COWETA — City leaders on Thursday celebrated breaking ground on a Coweta Police Department facility to help bring the city’s law enforcement into the modern era.
Construction on the 12,800-square-foot police station funded through the One for Coweta sales tax initiative, is expected to be completed by spring 2027.
Located near 111th Street and Highway 51, the new station will be a significant upgrade from the department’s current building, which is approximately 2,500 square feet and dates to the late 1930s.
When 1940 arrived, Coweta’s population was only 1,455 but has since grown to an estimated 11,093 this year. The city’s population has jumped 14.3% since the 2020 Census.
At an estimated project cost of $8.4 million, the new station will provide expanded space and modern infrastructure to support the department’s day-to-day operations, with the ability to expand as Coweta continues to grow.
“This has been a long journey, and it’s only possible because Coweta citizens chose — again — to invest in public safety,” said Coweta Police Chief Michael Bell. This new building will give our officers and dispatchers the space and infrastructure to serve Coweta now and as the community continues to grow.”
Plans for the new facility include a secured vehicle sally port, an expanded dispatch area designed for future staffing growth, and dedicated spaces to support modern public safety operations.
That includes a patrol briefing room, investigation offices and interview rooms, and evidence intake and processing areas. The design also includes a physical training room, a tornado shelter, and an on-site generator.
The project site was donated by Tommy Thompson Inc., with the stipulation that the property be used for public safety purposes. BKL and Flintco are serving as project partners. Bell was joined at the groundbreaking by city officials, Wagoner County law enforcement, the Wagoner County district attorney, Lighthorse Police and community stakeholders.
