Some residents have been complaining about discolored water in recent weeks, and the city of Broken Arrow is asking you to report to them.
The city’s Utilities Department reported an 80% increase in daily water usage from 10 million to 18 million gallons a day. Broken Arrow’s water customers use an average of 10 million gallons of water every day, but during the summer months when the temperature rises, usage goes up.
Water going down the line to your home is first treated at the Verdigris Water Treatment Plant.
One of the treatment processes done at the plant is the removal of excess iron from the water — but not all of the iron is removed. Some of it ends up in a mineral scale that forms on the pipes in the city’s water distribution system.
When there is an increase in water usage, the velocity of the water is increased and that can stir up some mineral scale that has settled in the pipes. The city says that’s what is causing discolored water.
If you’re experiencing discolored water, the city is asking you to contact them at 918-259-7000, ext. 7221 or email them at tnix@brokenarrowok.gov. The city will need your name, address and phone number.
The city will send a crew out to your home to collect a sample and run tests on the water. The they will flush the main on your street to clear the water.
