Most student parents/guardians and staff at the Broken Arrow Public Schools say they oppose an indoor mask policy for students, according to a survey sent out by the district last month.
Nearly 61% of parents/guardians indicated they were against such a policy, while 39% said they favored one.
As for school district staff, about 62% are against an indoor mask policy, while 38% support it.
The school district released results from the survey today after it was sent out on Sept. 24.
The following question posed: “Are you in favor or not in favor of an indoor mask policy requiring all students and staff to wear masks indoors, with the ability to ‘opt-out’ based on medical, religious or strong personal beliefs?”
Some 5,066 votes were cast by parents and guardians, while the staff survey garnered 1,267 votes, said BAPS spokesman Adam Foreman.
Three different pieces of information were asked of the parents/guardians to validate their vote, including student ID number, school site and grade level. Staff votes were validated by employee ID number and site/school.
The votes provided essential data used to validate the results, including cross-referencing with the Student Information System and enrollment data. Invalid votes were removed if there were duplicate votes through one number, votes for both choices being cast and votes with no answer selected.
Foreman says the district’s Board of Education will examine the survey results and discuss them at the next regularly scheduled board meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11, at the Education Service Center.
