More Broken Arrow intersections are getting a facelift following a vote by the City Council.
In all, 36 gray traffic signal poles, mast arms, and bases will be painted black at intersections throughout the city in the coming months.
The painted poles will bring more consistency within the city like those in the Rose District and New Orleans Square.
In November, Cobalt Coatings painted seven of the 10 areas they originally contracted to paint before demobilizing for the winter.
“They look fantastic, and we are very happy with the results,” Construction Division Manager Timothy Robins said at the Feb. 6 City Council meeting.
Robins said that after Cobalt Coatings completed the first seven poles, the city began negotiating to expand the project. The Council approved a change order adding 26 intersections to the contract.
Mayor Debra Wimpee said some people have questioned why the city is doing this project.
“It’s beautification for our city,” Wimpee said. “When you keep your city up and keep things looking nice, it decreases crime and makes a beautiful environment for our city.”
Cobalt Coatings works with local and state governments to maintain and beautify metal structures, poles, and hydrants. Paint not only attracts attention but also protects against harsh weather conditions and extends the life of the equipment.
The process includes power washing the existing poles and applying white primer and black paint.
The original contract amount for the project was $169,525, which included 10 signal poles. The cost for the additional 26 intersections is $313,000, making the total project cost $483,125.
Robins confirmed that the added cost is within the budget allocated by the Streetlight Fund. The contractor has agreed to complete the project in two phases—spring and fall 2024.
“The pricing came in at such a good rate because this is what they specialize in,” Robins said.
Vice Mayor Christi Gillespie said this project demonstrates care and attention to detail for the entire city.
“It makes you feel like, ‘Wow, they’re updating things all over the place, not just in brand new parts of town,'” Gillespie said. “And I know it means something to the business owners in those areas.”
