Congratulations are in order for Karelis Olivares, winner of the City of Broken Arrow Utilities Department’s Drinking Water Week Art Contest.
This fall, Karelis, 14, will be a 9th-grade student at All Saints Catholic School. Her work titled “Water Fall” will be on permanent display on an electrical box wrap at 101st Street and Elm Place at New Orleans Square.
The annual art contest was a part of Drinking Water Week, a national observance May 2-8 that highlighted the value of water to each of us in our everyday lives. This year’s theme is “Drinking Water, There When You Need It,” and art submissions were judged on the following criteria:
- Creativity
- Theming/ Message
- Quality of artwork
This year marks the 47th Anniversary of the Safe Drinking Water Act that forms the core of national efforts to provide quality drinking water and protect the health of our citizens.
Tap water delivers public health protection, fire protection, support for our economy, and the quality of life we enjoy. Any measure of a successful society, including low mortality rates, economic growth and diversity, productivity, and public safety, are in some way related to access to safe water.
From the cup of coffee in the morning to the washing of our clothes, we use drinking water every day. The City of Broken Arrow ensures that the water delivered to consumers meets all federal and state standards and is clean and abundant.
