Six female high school students died after a 2-vehicle collision in southern Oklahoma, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said Tuesday.
Troopers said the students were in a passenger vehicle that collided with a semi-truck about 12:30 p.m. in Tishomingo, which is about 160 miles south of Tulsa. OHP said the girls were heading east on Highway 22 when their vehicle collided with a rock hauler that was southbound on U.S. 377.
“Our prayers are with each of the families involved and our community,” the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office said in a social media post. “This is an absolute tragedy which will have lifelong effects.
A letter from the Tishomingo Public Schools Supt. Bobby Waitman stated the district “has suffered a great loss today” involving the students. “Our hearts are broken, and we are grieving with our students and staff.”
The letter said counselors are available for students and space has been prepared at the high school with counselors available throughout the evening. School will be in session Wednesday at each campus, “but our focus will be the emotional well-being of the students.”
The Tishomingo Police Department and Johnston County Sheriff’s Office, as well as the Tishomingo and Ravia Fire Departments and Johnston County EMS are assisting in the response to, and investigation, of the crash.
