A GoFundMe fundraiser has been organized for Austin Hathway, the 12-year-old boy from Broken Arrow who was tragically killed during a sledding accident last Thursday.
Police say Hathway was sledding on the north side of Albany Street near Bass Pro Shop when he entered the road and was struck by a westbound pickup truck. The driver did not stop, although police have said they are not sure if the driver was aware an accident had occurred.
As of Saturday evening, police had not indicated whether the driver or truck had been located.
Brandon and Ava Zambalis, friends of the family, are organizing the GoFundMe campaign, which has already raised more than $20,000.
“The city of Broken Arrow and surrounding areas are devastated to learn that a vibrant 12-year-old boy in our community has lost his life on what was supposed to be a fun-filled day of playing in the snow and sledding with friends and family,” the page says. “The family is grief-stricken, and we are creating this page to help with any expenses that may be incurred.
“The mother’s primary job is providing for her beautiful boys as a motivated entrepreneur. She uses her artistic abilities to paint, restore and sell furniture at The Vintage Phoenix. We are asking you to join us in prayer and to please consider donating to help assist and pay any bills that may occur while the family puts the pieces back together.”
Those who would like to donate gift cards to assist meals are asked to mail them or drop them off at 701 W Washington St. in Broken Arrow.
