Several people were seriously injured Saturday morning when a pickup truck crashed into the Oneta Station Diner in Broken Arrow.
Patrons were inside the restaurant enjoying breakfast when the white pickup crashed through the front glass, pushing diners and furniture all the way back into the bar and kitchen area. Broken Arrow police and firefighters immediately responded to the scene to help the injured, secure the scene and began an investigation.
As of 1 p.m., 8 people had been transported to area hospitals for evaluation and treatment, one of them reported to be in critical condition, and two juveniles were among those transported, the Broken Arrow Police Department said.
Based on the preliminary investigation, there is currently no indication that this incident was intentional, police said, but the investigation remains active as officers work to determine what led to the accident. No arrests have been made.
“The Broken Arrow Police Department’s thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by today’s incident at the Oneta Station Diner,” BAPD said in a statement. “We are especially mindful of those who were injured, their families and friends, the employees and patrons of the restaurant, and all members of our community who have been impacted by this tragic event.
“We recognize the concern and uncertainty incidents like this create, and our hearts are with those facing difficult circumstances today. We are grateful for the swift response of first responders, medical personnel, and those who immediately rendered aid to those in need.
“As our community processes this event, we ask for patience as investigators work to gather facts and for continued support and prayers for all those impacted. Our commitment remains to providing accurate information, supporting those affected, and maintaining transparency throughout the investigative process.”
As of 2 p.m. today there was no update on the condition of the victims. We’re follow up with more information when it’s available.
This incident is at least the eighth storefront crash that has occurred in Broken Arrow the last 2 years. When the Sentinel looked into this last year, the city noted that 6 of the 7 incidents documented happened in private parking lots and there was no evidence any of them was intentional. The accidents were mostly attributed to driver error.
