The Broken Arrow Police Department has clarified charges filed against a man who was arrested after walking into an AT&T store carrying a rifle and wearing a tactical vest.
Police said 26-year-old Zachary James Morrissey was arrested on two charges of unlawfully carrying a weapon, as he was in possession of brass knuckles and a .50 caliber firearm. It’s illegal in Oklahoma to carry a firearm that exceeds .45 caliber, the department said.
Broken Arrow officers responded to the AT&T store near 1200 E. Hillside Dr. after receiving calls that a man identified as Morrissey was seen walking through the parking lot and was armed with a rifle.
Morrissey reportedly walked by two stores before entering AT&T with the rifle and wearing a tactical vest. He stated he was attempting to purchase something from the store.
Prior to this incident, the man tried walking into the Broken Arrow courthouse carrying the rifle, but city employees locked the doors. He told officers he was trying to obtain property he had left behind after getting out of jail this past weekend.
Officers responded at that point and released him. A family member then reportedly dropped Morrissey off near Lynn Lane Road and Hillside Drive before he entered AT&T.
Employees at AT&T were able to run out the back of the store when Morrissey entered and nobody was injured.
Police originally stated one of the reasons Morrissey was arrested at AT&T was due to a previous warrant.
The Sentinel has asked Broken Arrow police for clarification on whether officers knew about the warrant or had run Morrissey’s record during the courthouse incident.
