A 12-year-old tragically died on New Year’s Day in Tulsa’s Midtown neighborhood during a shooting, and police said the boy was not the intended target.
Tulsa police responded to shooting call in the 1900 block of E. 14th St. and found the boy deceased in the entryway.
TInitial investigation revealed that the home had been rented through VRBO earlier that day by an out-of-state individual for a party for their juvenile nephew, Tulsa police said.
Approximately 5-6 juveniles and one adult teenager were present at the time of the shooting. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots while the victim, who appeared intoxicated, was on the porch.
None of the initial witnesses identified a suspect or provided a description. However, three juveniles later came forward for questioning with their parents, police said.
Evidence at the scene included numerous shell casings and bullet strikes to the house, suggesting the shooting occurred near the street.
The preliminary investigation indicates that the victim was not the intended target. Two juveniles at the location, aged 16 and 15, admitted to previous conflicts with individuals. They further stated that their residence had been targeted in two separate shootings in the past year.
The investigation is ongoing, and detectives are seeking additional witnesses from the party. It is believed this was not a random act, but a targeted attack linked to the location of the party.
