A law firm and data visualization agency released the results of a study that attempted to identify which American roads were the deadliest.
The law firm of Elk & Elk and 1Point21 Interactive examined all fatal crashes that occurred on a primary road (or limited-access highways that connect to other roads only at interchanges) in the U.S. from 2000-2019 – over 91,000 crashes in total.
The study measured accident data along 10-mile stretches of highway.
“Through our analysis, we identified the deadliest stretches of highway in the entire United States, along with the worst stretch in each state,” the firm said.
A large amount of the most dangerous thoroughfares were in Texas and Florida. But Oklahoma did place one highway among the worst: Interstate 44 in Tulsa.
The freeway from 222A and 231 has racked up 58 fatal accidents with 59 fatalities, according to the group’s studies.
That part of I-44 falls between 49th W. Ave. east to the Broken Arrow Expressway (U.S.-64).
To be fair, major construction has taken place along much of I-44 in Tulsa the last several years to widen and add lanes in hopes of making the interstate safer and more efficient for moving traffic.
Dallas had 5 of the top 10 most dangerous routes, including I-35E, Highway 75, I-635 and I-30, and Houston had 2.
The deadliest stretch of road in the entire United States can be found in Houston, Texas. This section of I-45 runs right through Houston, Texas between exits 49B to 60A. On average, there were 7.7 fatal crashes on that 10-mile stretch every year. The worst year was 2006, with 15 crashes

The North Houston Highway Improvement Project has been in the works since 2002, with plans of widening and rerouting parts of I-45. However, it was put on hold as of October 2021.
This study is based on 2000-2019 fatal crash data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
