A semi-truck carrying a full load of fertilizer crashed on a highway exit ramp in Tulsa Thursday, leaving the driver in critical condition and snarling traffic in the interchange for hours.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said a 2016 Freightliner driven by Robert McElroy, 62, of Clarinda, Iowa, crashed on tythe I-244 eastbound exit ramp to U.S. 169 northbound at about 4:40 p.m.
First responders reported the truck was carrying fertilizer — possibly ammonium nitrate — and was on fire.
Troopers had to shut down the ramp for more than 4½ hours to work the accident site. McElroy was transported by EMSA to St. John Medical Center in Tulsa with head and trunk injuries. His last known condition was critical.
