UPDATE: Tulsa and Wagoner counties are under a tornado watch until 9:15 p.m. Beginning later this afternoon, the severe weather front will ramp up and that’s no April Fool’s Day joke.
The National Weather Service this morning placed the Tulsa metro area, including Tulsa and Wagoner counties, at “moderate” risk of severe storms, including very large and destructive hail, strong tornadoes and damaging wind gusts.
The primary severe weather threat will evolve as a cold front and dryline approach eastern Oklahoma. Storms are expected to begin forming late this afternoon and persist through much of the evening. Hail sizes could reach up to tennis balls and wind gusts could approach 70 mph with some storms.
The Storm Prediction Center said the magnitude of the tornado threat is a bit less certain, given the very strong flow and seasonably rich low-level moisture in the atmosphere there is potential for a couple of strong tornadoes late this afternoon into tonight.
