The Oklahoma Department of Transportation is hosting a virtual open house through Aug. 31 to discuss proposed improvements to State Highway 51 at the intersections of Washington St. and 91st St.
According to ODOT, the purpose of the project is to improve safety and traffic operations where Washington and 91st streets intersect with the highway approximately 100 feet apart by realigning the two intersections into a single intersection with a traffic signal.
The junctions, as they are now, create two offsetting “T” intersections that the department said produces a conflict for turning — creating “the potential for high-speed, severe collisions.” The posted speed limit on State Highway 51 is 55 mph.
The improvement would include dedicated left turn lanes with deceleration distance provided in both directions on State Highway 51, and a right turn lane will be provided for westbound traffic on E. 91st Street.
Minor additional right-of-way will be required. The department said all roadways will remain open during construction, which is scheduled to begin in 2024.
ODOT has created a website for the virtual open house to present the design for the project and allow the public to submit input. The website includes details about the plans, an FAQ section, interactive map, comment submission, and more.
