Broken Arrow police identified the man who shot one of their officers over the weekend during a traffic stop as Cory Gene Batt.
According to Broken Arrow Police Department spokesman Christopher Walker, investigators believe Batt, 31, died of a self-inflected gunshot wound, but the medical examiner’s office must still complete their investigation.
Caleb Sherman – a 5-year veteran of the department – was treated at a local hospital for a gunshot wound to the leg and released last Saturday.
Police say Sherman attempted to make a stop on a vehicle for a traffic violation around 2:40 a.m. around County Line Road and E. Kenosha Street. Two suspects fled from the vehicle, and Batt led officers on a brief chase.
When the vehicles stopped and Sherman confronted Batt, police say Batt and Sherman exchanged gunfire. Batt’s body was later found in a wooded area south of E. Kenosha Street.
According to media reports, the U.S. Marshals Office is looking for Jason Maple, who they say was in the passenger seat of the vehicle Batt was driving. Authorities say in the media report that Maple – a member of the Irish Mob – has felony warrants from Rogers County for possession of a stolen vehicle and assault with a dangerous weapon.
Anyone with knowledge of Maple’s whereabouts is asked to contact the U.S. Marshals Office at 1-866-WANTED2, or USMA Tips at www.usmarshals.gov/tips.
