Union Public Schools is strongly committed to parent involvement in our schools, and we hope you will provide input as we move forward with some exciting new projects.
“These are extremely important projects as our district starts planning ahead for the needs of our students,” said Superintendent Dr. Kirt Hartzler. “It is critical that our parents have a say as we start planning for our children’s futures. There are many ways in which to participate.”
Long-Range Planning Committee
This Board-appointed committee, chaired by Associate Superintendent Charlie Bushyhead, is already hard at work compiling a list of projects under consideration for the district’s next bond initiative.
We anticipate this will be a 5-year bond, with a vote that would take place in February 2023. Bonds can be used for capital improvement projects, like the building of new facilities or repairing of existing facilities. It can also be used for transportation, textbooks or technology equipment. If you have ideas or suggestions on projects you think need to be part of this proposed bond, please email Charlie Bushyhead at bushyhead.charlie@unionps.org. Thank you to the members of Union’s Long-Range Planning Committee.
6th/7th Grade Center Redesign
One area of concern that we have frequently heard from parents is the transition of students from elementary to the Union 6th/7th Grade Center. Indeed, it is a large campus, and the existing layout is one that isn’t always conducive to the way students learn today. Assistant
Superintendent John Federline, along with 6th/7th Grade Principals Tammy Ward and Clay Hucke, is chairing a committee that is reimagining the 6th/7th Grade Center for the 21st century.
“What’s driving this redesign is doing what’s best for our kids,” said Federline. If you would like to join the committee or offer suggestions, please contact Federline at federline.john@unionps.org.
Union’s Next 5-Year Strategic Plan
Work is already underway on the district’s next 5-year Strategic Plan for 2023-2028. Dr. Todd Nelson, senior executive director of Research, Design and Assessment, will oversee development of the new plan.
“We fully expect that our district’s mission of ‘100% Graduation, College & Career-Ready’ and our core values will remain the same, but there will likely be new elements added into the plan based on what we learn from the new school climate surveys,” said Nelson. The University of Oklahoma is assisting with the survey process and surveys have already gone out to Union parents.
“If you have not received your survey, please check your email’s Junk Folder, as we highly value parents’ opinions in creating this new plan that will carry the district forward through 2028,” said Nelson. In the event you did not receive a survey, he may be reached at nelson.todd@unionps.org.
