A man who was found to have an explosive device sitting in the back seat of his car during a traffic stop has been identified, Broken Arrow police said.
Zane Bennett, 19, of Broken Arrow was arrested for manufacturing an explosive and his charges are intended for Tulsa County District Court, said Broken Arrow Police Department spokesman Christopher Walker.
Also arrested was 20-year-old Mariah Davis of Broken Arrow for petty larceny in connection with an earlier incident that day. Her charges are intended for Muscogee Creek Nation Court.
Around 3:45 p.m. Monday in the 4000 block of E. Kenosha St., just west of the Creek Turnpike, Broken Arrow police pulled over a silver Chrysler 200 sedan that was alleged to be involved in a theft at a local Wal-Mart earlier that afternoon. Davis, the driver, was placed into custody after three Lego sets totaling $289 were found in the back seat of the car.
According to a police report of the incident, a device “that appeared to be a bomb” was also sitting in the back seat in plain view of responding officers. They saw four red “booms sticks” with green fuses tied together, along with one bottle rocket in the middle of the green fuses, the report said.
There were also bolts on the outside of the boom sticks and the device was held together with black electrical tape, the report said.
Police said Bennett was dropped off by someone at the scene to recover his vehicle but was detained by police for questioning.
Bennett told officers he made the bomb out of fireworks Sunday morning at a local motel in Broken Arrow, staying in one room and making the device in another room.
According to the report, Bennett said he was “gong to blow things up with it” but didn’t intend to hurt anyone and he hadn’t had a chance to detonate it Monday, so it was left in the back seat while his girlfriend was driving.
