The first phase of the 81st Street project between Evans and Oneta roads is complete.
Crews with the City of Broken Arrow’s Streets and Stormwater Division began working on resurfacing the one-mile stretch of roadway in late November. The three-step process was projected to take five to six weeks to complete, but city crews and a contracting company were able to finish the phase ahead of schedule.
The first step of Phase 1 required city crews to excavate the constant base failures to the native material under the road. The failures are the repeated temporary maintenance issues, such as repairing potholes. The excavated material is then replaced with new asphalt.
A contractor was hired to complete the second step which required removing the top two inches of the full width of the roadway surface.
The final step of project’s first phase called for city crews to replace the top two inches with new hot mix asphalt and then paint the lane markings. The painted lines were completed on Dec. 23.
The timeline of Phase 2 of this project is to be determined, but will consist of lowering 81st Street between Colony Avenue and approximately 500 feet east of Wright Place. The lowering is being done to increase visibility for motorists in this area. Phase 2 will not begin until the rural water district relocates its waterline.
“Because of the poor condition of the road, we decided to move forward with Phase 1 until the rural water district has the opportunity to relocate the waterline,” said Rocky Henkel, City of Broken Arrow Streets and Stormwater Director.
The City will provide an update when the second phase of this project is set to begin.
