Ascension St. John has installed a new virtual reality training system designed to help their security officers improve how they respond to active shooter, domestic violence and other high-stress situations that require de-escalation tactics or use of force.
The V-180 solution includes three large screens for a 180-degree immersive training environment. Outcomes are based on the actions taken by the police officer in real-time with multiple responses from on-screen persons.
In 2022, Ascension St. John’s security department was awarded three federally funded grants from the Oklahoma Office of Homeland Security totaling $419,000. These funds were used to purchase and provide physical enhancements for the security department, including the interactive officer training system.
Darrel Long, Director of Security for Ascension St. John Oklahoma states, “We are excited to have this new training tool. It will help our officers develop the best skills in response situations that pose a threat to our patients and associates.”
Ascension St. John is the first private hospital in the nation to add the new VirTra simulator as a training resource.
The VirTra simulator is designed to save the lives of first responders and citizens by allowing officers to train in real-world scenarios.
