The Tulsa Police Department said officers were able to save a man who was about to jump off the I-244 bridge during rush hour Thursday.
Officers were called to 100 S. Pittsburg Ave. at 5:45 p.m. for a suicidal subject who was preparing to jump off the bridge.
The man climbed onto the outside of the bridge over I-244 while heavy rush-hour traffic was driving below, police said.
Officers found the man clinging to the ledge and barrier fence of the bridge. Traffic below was immediately rerouted to prevent an accident, and the Tulsa Fire Department assisted.
Two police officers and another officer in training made contact with the man on the bridge. After several minutes of conversation, the officers convinced the man to climb back to the other side of the fence and they helped him to safety.
The man was taken to Crisis Care where mental health resources were provided.
“We would like to show our appreciation to the officers, dispatchers and firefighters for their swift action in resolving a very tense situation,” TPD said in a Facebook post.
